JUSTICE SYSTEM VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Be a Positive Role Model for Teens in the Justice System

Many juveniles who become involved in the justice system have come from difficult family situations and/or have suffered traumas, and they face the added challenge of negative peer influences. The B.E.S.T. Mentoring Program matches adults and juveniles one-on-one in order to provide youth with enduring links to positive supports in the community.

As a mentor, you will meet weekly with a teen for several hours.  This volunteer position is a great opportunity to build a meaningful relationship, help a teen become a successful part of the community, learn about the justice system and gain experience working with youth.

A 13-hour training will be offered Wednesday, November 12 and Thursday, November 13 from 6:00-9:30 pm and Saturday, November 15 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and be able to commit to an average of 3 hours per week for one year. Ideal candidates are capable of interacting with youth in a positive, appropriate, supportive and respectful manner.

For more information, visit http://www.co.boulder.co.us/cs/cb/mentor.htm, call the Justice System Volunteer Program at 303-441-3718 or e-mail jallan@bouldercounty.org

Bi-Lingual Volunteers Can Help Spanish-Speaking Defendants Navigate The Criminal Justice System

A wonderful new program, De Puerta a Puerta, has been established to assist Spanish–speaking defendants better understand our criminal justice system and their own legal obligations. Volunteers are needed to assist clients in navigating their way through the system by:

  • Explaining basic procedural aspects of the courts

  • Assisting in filling out forms and paperwork

  • Accompanying defendants after sentencing to set up Justice Center appointments

By providing these supports, the program can help an under-served population better face the challenges of an unfamiliar legal system while reducing the number of defendants who fail to comply with court orders.

Volunteers must be bi-lingual in Spanish/English. Some knowledge of the criminal justice system would be helpful. 2-3 hours per week for a 6- month commitment. Mondays in Boulder, 10:00-12 noon or Wednesdays in Longmont, 10:00-12 noon.

Excellent training provided by judicial staff.  Contact the JUSTICE SYSTEM VOLUNTEER PROGRAM at 303-441-3718  or  jallan@bouldercounty.org
