County Acquires Archdiocese of Denver Property
The Commissioners voted Jan. 23 to purchase 200 acres of land owned by the Archdiocese
of Denver as county open space. The property is located near Lafayette, north of Dillon
Road and east of 120th Street, and adjacent to the Adams County border. Portions of the
Archdiocese property in Adams County are slated to be annexed to Broomfield for a new
high school and residential development.
Under the purchase agreement, Boulder County would convey a conservation easement to
both the City of Broomfield and the City of Lafayette per the terms of an
Intergovernmental Agreement among the three entities. The Archdiocese also would grant
a conservation easement to the county, at no cost, on 61 acres of land, likely to be acquired
by Broomfield at a future date.
Preservation of the property as open space is important because it extends the buffer
between Louisville, Lafayette and Broomfield from U.S. 36 to the East County Line. In
addition, portions of the property are designated as lands of agricultural importance.
Preservation also reserves a specific corridor with adjacent open space for the potential
development of a northwest parkway. For more information, call the Parks and Open

Joint Purchase of Callahan Property Approved
The Commissioners agreed Jan. 28 to a joint purchase with Louisville of 46 acres of land on
the south side of Baseline Road, about mile west of 95th Street. Under the purchase
agreement, Louisville retains 12 acres for three residential lots. The rest of the land is to be
preserved as open space -- one of the few remaining open parcels along Baseline Road.
Since 1978, the land has been designated as part of the Davidson Mesa scenic area and as a
buffer between Louisville and Lafayette. Northwest portions of the property also are lands

Regional Transportation Task Force Receives Draft Report
A draft report presented to the Regional Transportation Task Force on Jan. 16 identifies
three traffic corridors that are likely to be the most congested in Boulder County in coming
decades: U.S. Highway 36, the Diagonal Highway and State Highway 7 or Arapahoe Road.
Daily trips on each of these roads are as follows:
U.S. Highway 36 from Broomfield to Boulder: 68,000 today, with 81,000 by the year 2020.Diagonal Highway from Longmont to Boulder: 33,000 today, with 43,000 by 2020.State Highway 7 from Lafayette to Boulder: 14,000 today, with 17,600 by 2020.
The report studied three additional corridors that also experience heavy traffic: State
Highway 36 from Boulder to Lyons (the North Foothills Highway), State Highway 119
through Boulder Canyon and U.S. Highway 287.
The draft report suggests methods of coping with increased traffic, but all options are
costly. The Regional Transportation Task Force will study these suggestions, seek
consensus and make recommendations for solutions over the coming year. For more

Boulder County Youth Corps Expands
Thanks to the participation of several Boulder County communities, the Boulder County Youth
Corps program is expanding by 50 percent in only its second year. Last summer the Youth Corps
hired 10 teams of 10 Boulder County teenagers, each with an adult team leader, to work on a variety
of community service projects. For example, the teens built a garage for Casa de la Esperanza, a
Boulder County family housing community in Longmont for agricultural workers, and they
constructed new trails on the Rabbit Mountain and Hall Ranch Open Space.
With city and town involvement this year, an additional 50 teens will be tackling projects in their own
home towns, beginning in mid-June. Thus far, the communities of Erie and Superior have agreed to
co-sponsor a team, as will Louisville. Longmont will sponsor its own team, and Boulder is considering
one, too.
Last year, projects for the Youth Corps were selected from proposals submitted by Boulder
County departments. This year, participating communities also will submit project ideas, and
non-profit organizations in the communities are invited to submit proposals as well.
Youth age 14 to 17 may apply to work for the program. Applications are available Feb. 1 from
school counseling offices, at city or town halls and at recreation centers, or by calling the Youth
Corps office at 441-4960.
Commissioners to Serve on Boards
During county reorganization activities in January, the Commissioners designated themselves to
serve as county representatives for the following boards: Ron Stewart -- Economic Futures Panel,
Regional Transportation Task Force and Consortium of Cities; Jana Mendez -- Fair Board, Regional
Air Quality Council, Solid Waste Authority and Human Services Coordinating Council; Paul Danish
-- Denver Regional Council of Governments Board of Directors, Private Industry Council, Urban
Drainage and Flood Control, and Rocky Flats Local Impacts Initiative.
Eldora Hotel Receives Boulder County Historic Landmark Designation
The Commissioners have designated the Gold Miner Hotel, 601 Klondyke, Eldora, as a Boulder
County Historic Landmark. The hotel was built in 1897-1898, at the height of Eldora's mining and
real estate boom. The log structure also was a restaurant and saloon, and it served as the social and
business center for the community. In 1989, the hotel was placed on the National Register of
